Import AVCHD to Windows Movie Maker

How to Import AVCHD files to Windows Movie Maker freely on Windows 7/vista/xp?

I just recently got a new Sony camcorder that records in HD. The videos are in AVCHD format, with a m2ts file extension. Windows Movie Maker doesn't support editing this format and I can't seem to find a codec to fix that. It said that AVCHD and other HD formats on Windows Movie Maker are sometimes reduced. Is there a codec for Movie Maker out there that I haven't found yet? If not, How can I convert AVCHD video files to video files suitable for Windows Movie Maker?
