Comparison between MP4 and 3GP

MP4 is a multimedia container format standard specified as a part of MPEG-4. It is most commonly used to store digital video and digital audio streams, especially those defined by MPEG, but can also be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images.

3GP was Audio and video container format developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP); designed as a multimedia format for transmitting audio and video files between 3G cell phones and over the Internet; commonly used by mobile phones that support video capture.

Summary:

1.Both MP4 and 3GP are lossy formats which sacrifices quality for file size.

2.MP4 was created by Apple as a container for QuickTime while 3GP is for mobiles with less resources(light weight and videos lower in quality).

3.MP4 is the industry standard with better quality and has more widespread support than 3GP

4.Everything in computer world depends on bit rate , mp4 stores everything at higher bit rate than that of 3gp
