How to convert any AVCHD.mts files to AVI freely on mac?

I just got a new Canon HD camcorder with flash memory and just shot some video. When I downloaded the video to my computer it saved the files in a format called .mts which I think may be standard for certain AVCHD recordings. Anyway I've looked at several supposedly free software options and all of them are just trials, or only post with watermarks. Is there any easy or effective way that I can convert the mts files to avi so I can easily use with Final Cut Express. Please help!
