"After a day out i come back home to copy my pictures and videos from the memory card. I copy the pictures and put them in a external hard drive i have but the videos (the icon for the specific video is just grey, unlike the picture which has the picture as its icon) says it cannot play and I am still unable to edit them with Windows Movie Maker, why?"

Panasonic Lumix FZ38 is a very nice compact bridge type camera. However, when you have captured moving images in the AVCHD lite format, you can`t edit them and make movies. The software supplied with the camera does not open files and the files cannot be opened in Windows Movie Maker because the codecs are copyrighted.

Then, I think you will not want to change your mode of capture to a lower definition, so the best solution is get a third party editing/conversion software.
